# Spencer Anderson

**Spencer Anderson** (born June 7, 2000) is an American professional [football](/source/American_football) [guard](/source/Guard_(gridiron_football)) for the [Pittsburgh Steelers](/source/Pittsburgh_Steelers) of the [National Football League](/source/National_Football_League) (NFL). He played [college football](/source/College_football) for the [Maryland Terrapins](/source/Maryland_Terrapins_football).

## Early life

Anderson was born on June 7, 2000, and grew up in [Bowie, Maryland](/source/Bowie,_Maryland).[1] He is a cousin of [basketball](/source/Basketball) player [Harry Giles](/source/Harry_Giles_(basketball)).[2] Anderson attended [Bishop McNamara High School](/source/Bishop_McNamara_High_School) and was ranked a three-star recruit, the 73rd-best [tackle](/source/Tackle_(gridiron_football)) and the 17th-best player in the state by [247Sports](/source/247Sports).[3] He committed to play [college football](/source/College_football) at [Maryland](/source/Maryland_Terrapins_football) over various other offers.[4]

## College career

As a true [freshman](/source/Freshman) at Maryland in 2018, Anderson made appearances in two games.[5] The following season, he played in all but one of their 12 games, making a single start.[5] He started all five games in the [COVID-19](/source/COVID-19)-shortened 2020 season.[5] In 2021, Anderson started all 13 games, including four at [center](/source/Center_(gridiron_football)) and nine at [right tackle](/source/Right_tackle), only allowing one [sack](/source/Quarterback_sack) on the year.[6] In his final year, he started all 13 games, including 12 at [right guard](/source/Right_guard) and one at right tackle, while allowing two sacks.[6][7] He was invited to the [East–West Shrine Bowl](/source/East%E2%80%93West_Shrine_Bowl) following the season.[8]

## Professional career

Anderson was selected in the seventh round (251st overall) of the [2023 NFL draft](/source/2023_NFL_draft) by the [Pittsburgh Steelers](/source/Pittsburgh_Steelers)[9] and on May 12, he signed his rookie contract.[10] He made the team's final roster and saw his first playing time in their Week 4 loss to the [Houston Texans](/source/Houston_Texans).[11] As a rookie, he appeared in eight games, but recorded no starts during them.[12] He would make his first postseason appearance in the AFC Wild Card playoff game versus the [Buffalo Bills](/source/2023_Buffalo_Bills_season), which the Steelers would lose 31–17, ending Anderson's rookie season.

In the 2024 season, he recorded his first start in Week 1 where the Steelers beat the [Atlanta Falcons](/source/2024_Atlanta_Falcons_season) 18–10. He would subsequently start twice more against the [Denver Broncos](/source/2024_Denver_Broncos_season) and the [Los Angeles Chargers](/source/2024_Los_Angeles_Chargers_season), both wins for the Steelers.[13] Beginning with Week 4's loss to the [Indianapolis Colts](/source/2024_Indianapolis_Colts_season), Anderson became a rotational player with rookie left guard [Mason McCormick](/source/Mason_McCormick) being added to the offensive line's starting lineup.[14] Anderson finished the 2024 season with four starts, but appeared in all 17 regular season games. He made a second postseason appearance with the Steelers in 2024 when the team fell in the AFC Wild card round to the [Baltimore Ravens](/source/Baltimore_Ravens) with a final score of 28–14.[15]
