# Spechtensee

The **Spechtensee** is a lake in [Styria](/source/Styria), [Austria](/source/Austria).

The lake is situated at the southern edge of the [Totes Gebirge](/source/Totes_Gebirge) mountains in the parish of [Pürgg-Trautenfels](/source/P%C3%BCrgg-Trautenfels) near the municipality Wörschachwald. The lake is named after the Specht family, former residents in [Stainach](/source/Stainach) who lived on the so-called *Spechtengut* (Specht Estate) (nowadays *Schloss Sonnhof* (Sonnhof Manor House)) until the end of the 19th century. The Spechtensee was part of the estate.

The lake is drained by the [Wörschachbach](/source/W%C3%B6rschachbach), which flows through the gorge of [Wörschach Gorge](/source/W%C3%B6rschach_Gorge) into the [Enns](/source/Enns_(river)) valley. It has a maximum depth of 8 metres (26 ft),[1][2] according to other sources 11 metres (36 ft).[3] The lake, which can be as warm as 23 °C (73 °F) in summer, is also used as a swimming lake. On its northern shore is a bathing area and in the middle of the lake a small bathing platform is anchored. In the vicinity of the lake there is the [Spechtensee Hut](/source/Spechtensee_Hut), a mountain hut belonging to the [Austrian Alpine Club](/source/Austrian_Alpine_Club). There is a circular walk around the lakeside.[3]

## Flora and fauna

On the eastern side of the lake there is a [fen](/source/Fen) that transitions with a [floating mat](/source/Floating_mat) into the open waters of the lake. There is another important floating mat on the western lakeshore. The [European white water lily](/source/European_white_water_lily) flourishes in the southern part of the lake and [signal crayfish](/source/Signal_crayfish) are bred here.[1] Fish species of the Spechtensee include [river trout](/source/River_trout) and [rainbow trout](/source/Rainbow_trout) as well as [tench](/source/Tench), [rudd](/source/Common_rudd), [roach](/source/Common_roach), [European chub](/source/European_chub) and [northern pike](/source/Northern_pike).[4]

## Geology

The lake is located amongst [moraines](/source/Moraine) from the [Würm glaciation](/source/W%C3%BCrm_glaciation) which seal the bottom of the lake and did create the depression for the lake with their embankments.[1] In addition around the lake are [conglomerates](/source/Conglomerate_(geology)) of the mainly [Late Cretaceous](/source/Late_Cretaceous) [Gosau Group](/source/Gosau_Group).[5]
