Natural regions of Chile.

**Southern Chile** is an informal geographic term for any place south of [Biobío River](/source/Biob%C3%ADo_River), the mouth of which is [Concepción](/source/Concepci%C3%B3n%2C_Chile), about 300 kilometres (200 mi) south of Santiago. Generally cities like [Temuco](/source/Temuco) are considered to be located in the south despite being relatively close to the geographical center of Chile. This is mainly because mainland Chile ended in [La Frontera](/source/La_Frontera%2C_Chile) until the [occupation of Araucanía](/source/Occupation_of_Araucan%C3%ADa) (1861–1883). Similarly, the [Southern Chile wine region](/source/Southern_Chile_(wine_region)) is close to the geographic center of the country, encompassing wine-growing areas in the [Bío Bío Region](/source/B%C3%ADo_B%C3%ADo_Region) and [Araucanía Region](/source/Araucan%C3%ADa_Region).

Southern Chile may also refer to the [Zona Sur](/source/Zona_Sur) region between Biobío and [Chacao Channel](/source/Chacao_Channel), which is often also called the [Chilean Lake District](/source/Chilean_Lake_District). It may also refer to the [Zona Austral](/source/Zona_Austral), also called the Extreme South.
