# Sound of Arisaig

The '''Sound of Arisaig''' [Lochaber](/source/Lochaber), [Scotland](/source/Scotland), separates the [Arisaig](/source/Arisaig) peninsula to the north from the [Moidart](/source/Moidart) peninsula to the south. At the eastern, landward end, the sound is divided by Ardnish into two [sea loch](/source/sea_loch)s. Loch nan Uamh lies to the north of Ardnish, [Loch Ailort](/source/Loch_Ailort) to the south. There are a number of small islands in the sound, of which [Eilean nan Gobhar](/source/Eilean_nan_Gobhar) and [Samalaman Island](/source/Samalaman_Island), both near to [Glenuig](/source/Glenuig) on the south shore, are the largest.

The [A830 road](/source/A830_road), called the Road to the Isles, runs along the east end of Loch Ailort, and then crosses Ardnish before turning westwards along the north shore of Loch nan Uamh and the sound proper. The [West Highland Line](/source/West_Highland_Line) follows the same route including the [Loch nan Uamh Viaduct](/source/Loch_nan_Uamh_Viaduct). The [A861 road](/source/A861_road) follows the south shore of Loch Ailort and the sound proper as far west as Glenuig.

The [Prince's Cairn](/source/Prince's_Cairn), marking the spot where [Bonnie Prince Charlie](/source/Bonnie_Prince_Charlie) finally left Scotland after the unsuccessful [Jacobite rising of 1745](/source/Jacobite_rising_of_1745), on 20 September 1746, overlooks Loch nan Uamh.<ref>[http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/usbiography/s/charlesedwardstuart.html Raising of the Standard]</ref>

The sound is a marine [Special Area of Conservation](/source/Special_Area_of_Conservation).
