# Soul blues

**Soul blues** is a style of [blues](/source/Blues) music developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s that combines elements of [soul music](/source/Soul_music) and [urban contemporary](/source/Urban_contemporary) music.[1]

## Origin

American singers and musicians who grew up listening to the electric blues by artists such as [Muddy Waters](/source/Muddy_Waters),[2] [Jimmy Reed](/source/Jimmy_Reed), and [Elmore James](/source/Elmore_James), and soul singers such as [Sam Cooke](/source/Sam_Cooke), [Ray Charles](/source/Ray_Charles)[3] and [Otis Redding](/source/Otis_Redding)[4] fused blues and soul music.[1] [Bobby Bland](/source/Bobby_Bland) was one of the pioneers of this style.[1]
