The film was initially produced by Hirschman-Northern Productions under the working title ''Men of the Tenth''.<ref>Munden (1997), p. 895.</ref> After it was filmed on [16 mm film](/source/16_mm_film) and released under the title ''The Red, White, and Black'', producer Stuart Hirschman asked [John Cardos](/source/John_Cardos) to salvage the film, and Cardos, after looking at the existing [footage](/source/footage), insisted that the entire film needed to be reshot in [35mm film](/source/35mm_movie_film).<ref>Fischer (2011), p. 126.</ref> Cardos directed the reshoot, which was entirely shot on an [Arriflex 35](/source/Arriflex_35) IIC.<ref>Pope (2013), p. 84.</ref>
