**Sotiris** "**Sotos**" **Nikolaidis** ([Greek](/source/Greek_language): Σωτήρης "Σώτος" Νικολαΐδης; (born May 25, 1974, in [Thessaloniki](/source/Thessaloniki), [Greece](/source/Greece)), is a retired Greek professional [basketball](/source/Basketball) player and current [basketball coach](/source/Basketball_coach). During his [club](/source/Sports_club) playing career, at a height of 1.86 m (6'1 1⁄4") tall, he played at the [point guard](/source/Point_guard) and [shooting guard](/source/Shooting_guard) positions.

## Professional career

Nikolaidis started his youth basketball career in Greece, with [HAN Thessaloniki](/source/X.A.N._Thessaloniki_B.C.). In 1995, he transferred to the [Greek Basket League](/source/Greek_Basket_League) club [PAOK Thessaloniki](/source/PAOK_BC), where he played for five years. With PAOK, he also played three seasons in Europe's top level competition, the [FIBA EuroLeague](/source/EuroLeague) ([1997–98](/source/1997%E2%80%9398_FIBA_EuroLeague), [1998–99](/source/1998%E2%80%9399_FIBA_EuroLeague), [1999–00](/source/1999%E2%80%9300_FIBA_EuroLeague)). Moreover, Nikolaidis also won the [Greek Cup](/source/Greek_Basketball_Cup) title with PAOK, in 1999.

In 2000, he moved to the Greek club [Maroussi Athens](/source/Maroussi_B.C.), and with them he won the European-wide secondary level [FIBA Saporta Cup](/source/FIBA_Saporta_Cup)'s [2000–01 season](/source/2000%E2%80%9301_FIBA_Saporta_Cup) championship. Nikolaidis was the hero of the 2001 [FIBA Saporta Cup Final](/source/FIBA_Saporta_Cup_Final), after he scored the game's two winning points, with [free throws](/source/Free_throw) made 15 seconds before the end of the game. He also played in the Greek Basket League with [Iraklis Thessaloniki](/source/Iraklis_Thessaloniki_B.C.), [AEK Athens](/source/AEK_B.C.), and [Rethymno](/source/Rethymno_Cretan_Kings_B.C.). With AEK, he also played two seasons in Europe's top level [EuroLeague](/source/EuroLeague) ([2003–04](/source/2003%E2%80%9304_EuroLeague) and [2004–05](/source/2004%E2%80%9305_EuroLeague)).

Nikolaidis then played with [Ilysiakos Athens](/source/Ilysiakos_BC) in the [Greek 2nd Division](/source/Greek_A2_Basket_League), and in the [semi-pro](/source/Semi-professional_sports) level [Greek 3rd Division](/source/Greek_B_Basket_League), with [Apollon Patras](/source/Apollon_Patras_B.C.). He ended his [club](/source/Sports_club) playing career in the Greek minor leagues, with HAN Thessaloniki.[1][2]

## National team career

With [Greece's Under-16 junior national team](/source/Greece_men's_national_under-16_basketball_team), Nikolaidis won the silver medal at the [1991 FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship](/source/1991_FIBA_Europe_Under-16_Championship). He also played in one [cap](/source/Cap_(sports)) (game) with the senior [Greek national basketball team](/source/Greek_national_basketball_team), in a game against [Belgium](/source/Belgian_national_basketball_team), at the [1999 FIBA EuroBasket qualification](/source/1999_FIBA_EuroBasket_qualification) tournament.

## Personal life

His sons [Alexandros](/source/Alexandros_Nikolaidis_(basketball)) and Apostolos also became professional basketball players.[3]
