The **Soper River** ([Inuktitut](/source/Inuktitut): ***Kuujuaq***,[*[pronunciation?](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Pronunciation)*] meaning "the great river") ([62°54′N 69°51′W / 62.9°N 69.85°W / 62.9; -69.85 (Soper River)](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Soper_River&params=62.9_N_69.85_W_type:waterbody_region:CA-NU&title=Soper+River)) is a waterway on [Baffin Island](/source/Baffin_Island), [Nunavut](/source/Nunavut). The river flows over 100 km (62 mi) and then empties into [Soper Lake](/source/Soper_Lake) and [Pleasant Inlet](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pleasant_Inlet&action=edit&redlink=1). The Soper River was designated a [Canadian Heritage River](/source/Canadian_Heritage_River) in 1992.[1]

## Research

The Soper River region's [plants](/source/Plant) have not been studied or inventoried since the 1920s.[2][3] In June 2012 four [Canadian](/source/Canadians) [botanists](/source/Botanist) from the [National Herbarium of Canada](/source/Canadian_Museum_of_Nature#National_Herbarium_of_Canada) travelled to the Soper River region to assess the region's botanical biodiversity by collecting samples and cataloguing the plant specimens.[2][3] The expedition was part of a five-year project to record [Arctic](/source/Arctic) [flora](/source/Flora) and improve the [taxonomy](/source/Taxonomy_(biology)) of the [Arctic ecology](/source/Arctic_ecology).[3][4]
