**Sompolno** /sompolno/ is a town in [Konin County](/source/Konin_County), [Greater Poland Voivodeship](/source/Greater_Poland_Voivodeship), in central [Poland](/source/Poland), with 3,614 inhabitants (2016).

## History

In the 10th century, the area became part of the emerging Polish state under its first historic ruler [Mieszko I](/source/Mieszko_I). In 1242, Duke [Casimir I of Kuyavia](/source/Casimir_I_of_Kuyavia) from the [Piast dynasty](/source/Piast_dynasty) stayed in Sompolno, and issued a [privilege](/source/Privilege_(law)) for the [Sulejów Abbey](/source/Sulej%C3%B3w_Abbey) there.[1] Sompolno was granted [town rights](/source/Town_rights) in 1477.[2] It was a [royal town](/source/Royal_city_in_Polish%E2%80%93Lithuanian_Commonwealth), administratively located in the [Brześć Kujawski Voivodeship](/source/Brze%C5%9B%C4%87_Kujawski_Voivodeship) in the [Greater Poland Province](/source/Greater_Poland_Province,_Crown_of_the_Kingdom_of_Poland) of the Kingdom of Poland. A route connecting [Warsaw](/source/Warsaw) with [Poznań](/source/Pozna%C5%84) and [Dresden](/source/Dresden) ran through the town in the 18th century and King [Augustus III of Poland](/source/Augustus_III_of_Poland) often traveled that route.[3]

During the [German occupation of Poland](/source/Occupation_of_Poland_(1939%E2%80%931945)) ([World War II](/source/World_War_II)), Sompolno was renamed to *Deutscheck* between 1939 and 1943 and then later to *Deutscheneck* between 1943 and 1945[4] in an attempt to erase traces of Polish origin.

## Sports
