==Background==
After a period of fronting the band The Big Broadcast, Belouis Some returned to his next project as a solo artist, recording the album ''[Living Your Life](/source/Living_Your_Life)''.<ref name="South Wales Evening Post">{{cite news |last=Lewis |first=Paul |title=Chart-bound |url=https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0004705/19930910/056/0056 |newspaper=[South Wales Evening Post](/source/South_Wales_Evening_Post) |date=10 September 1993 |page=4 |via=[British Newspaper Archive](/source/British_Newspaper_Archive) |url-access=subscription |access-date=27 October 2025}}</ref> "Something She Said" was released as the album's lead single on 30 August 1993.<ref>{{cite magazine |title=Single Releases |magazine=[Music Week](/source/Music_Week) |date=28 August 1993 |page=27 |issn=0265-1548}}</ref> It was Some's first single since "[Some Girls](/source/Some_Girls_(Belouis_Some_song))" was released in 1988. "Something She Said" failed to reach the top 100 of the [UK singles chart](/source/UK_singles_chart), reaching its peak at number 106 in its debut week on the chart.<ref name="Charts Plus"/> ''Living Your Life'' was originally scheduled for release in the UK on 13 September 1993,<ref name="South Wales Evening Post"/> but the album was subsequently shelved and only given a release in Germany in October 1993.<ref>{{cite magazine |title=Upcoming Album Releases |magazine=[Music & Media](/source/Music_%26_Media) |date=2 October 1993 |volume=10 |issue=40 |page=19 |oclc=29800226}}</ref> In a 2023 interview, Some called it "a great single" and attributed its commercial failure, alongside that of the album, to [Arista Records](/source/Arista_Records)' and [BMG](/source/Bertelsmann_Music_Group)'s lack of interest in promoting it.<ref>{{cite web |last=Blame |first=Steve |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Thw67r_DsJU |title=BELOUIS SOME; Beyond His Wildest IMAGINATION to FREDDIE MERCURY'S Queen support |work=POP The History Makers In-Depth Career Interviews |via=[YouTube](/source/YouTube) |date=3 April 2023 |access-date=27 October 2025}}</ref>

==Critical reception==
Upon its release as a single, ''[The Arbroath Herald](/source/Arbroath_Herald)'' awarded "Something She Said" a seven out of ten rating, with the reviewers calling it "a bit of a grower". They continued, "At first hearing, it's a fairly ordinary ballad, with drums and vocal and lots of other ingredients that we'd heard a hundred times before. After two or three hearings, however, the tune began to stick in our minds, and we feel it may be a grower to watch."<ref>{{cite news |title=On the Right Track: Single Reviews |url=https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000734/19930903/179/0025 |newspaper=[The Arbroath Herald](/source/Arbroath_Herald) |date=3 September 1993 |page=25 |via=[British Newspaper Archive](/source/British_Newspaper_Archive) |url-access=subscription |access-date=27 October 2025}}</ref> Jim Whiteford, writing for the ''[Dundee Evening Telegraph](/source/Evening_Telegraph_(Dundee))'', noted the "[Beatlish](/source/The_Beatles)" and [John Lennon](/source/John_Lennon)-styled sound on what he described as "quite good and different for '93".<ref>{{cite news |last=Whiteford |first=Jim |title=On the Record! - Singles |url=https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000563/19930902/174/0023 |newspaper=[Dundee Evening Telegraph](/source/Evening_Telegraph_(Dundee)) |date=2 September 1993 |page=23 |via=[British Newspaper Archive](/source/British_Newspaper_Archive) |url-access=subscription |access-date=27 October 2025}}</ref> Andrew Hirst of the ''[Huddersfield Daily Examiner](/source/Huddersfield_Daily_Examiner)'' remarked, "The 60s psychedelia swagger is punctuated by some incisive guitar work. It all works rather well."<ref>{{cite news |last=Hirst |first=Andrew |title=Reviews: Singles |url=https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000901/19930904/017/0017 |newspaper=[Huddersfield Daily Examiner](/source/Huddersfield_Daily_Examiner) |date=4 September 1993 |page=3 |via=[British Newspaper Archive](/source/British_Newspaper_Archive) |url-access=subscription |access-date=27 October 2025}}</ref>

A reviewer for the ''[Sunderland Echo](/source/Sunderland_Echo)'' felt that the "funk rock dance track" was "not in the same class as the excellent '[Imagination](/source/Imagination_(Belouis_Some_song))' which first brought him to the public's attention in the 1980s".<ref>{{cite news |title=Sounds Seven: Singles |url=https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000641/19930904/332/0028 |newspaper=[Sunderland Echo](/source/Sunderland_Echo) |date=4 September 1993 |page=28 |via=[British Newspaper Archive](/source/British_Newspaper_Archive) |url-access=subscription |access-date=27 October 2025}}</ref> John Greenwood of the ''Halifax Evening Courier'' was negative in his review, describing it as "bog-standard pop" and asking "Why has this talentless individual been given another chance? Why?"<ref>{{cite news |last=Greenwood |first=John |title=Trackdown: Singles |url=https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0005232/19930903/619/0008 |newspaper=Halifax Evening Courier |date=3 September 1993 |page=8 |via=[British Newspaper Archive](/source/British_Newspaper_Archive) |url-access=subscription |access-date=27 October 2025}}</ref>
