## History

### Early Solt

The region has been populated since the [Stone Age](/source/Stone_Age). The results of diggings brought up [Roman](/source/Ancient_Rome) coins, weapons and bodies. The road from the province of [Pannonia](/source/Pannonia) to [Dacia](/source/Dacia) cut through Solt. The first written documents mentioning Solt date back to 1145. Solt was under the jurisdiction of the [bishop](/source/Bishop) of [Kalocsa](/source/Kalocsa) from the 11th until the 13th century.

### Local legend

There is a local legend about the establishment of Solt, known as the Legend of the Golden Key. According to the legend, [Béla IV of Hungary](/source/B%C3%A9la_IV_of_Hungary) gave two golden keys to the town of Solt for hiding him from the invading [Mongolian tribes](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mongolian_tribe&action=edit&redlink=1). The keys were hidden on top of the local [Presbyterian](/source/Presbyterian) church which was hit by [lightning](/source/Lightning). The keys melted and were never found again. Since then, they are only seen in the [seal](/source/Seal_(emblem)) of the town.

### Middle Ages

When Hungary was occupied by the [Ottoman Empire](/source/Ottoman_Empire), Solt lost much of its population. The town is mentioned many times during the Hungarian uprising against the [Habsburgs](/source/Habsburgs); [Francis II Rákóczi](/source/Francis_II_R%C3%A1k%C3%B3czi) kept his army in the region.

In the second half of the 18th century, the North Hungarian [nobility](/source/Nobility) purchased the town and the surrounding area. The [castles](/source/Castle) of [Baron](/source/Baron) [Révay](/source/R%C3%A9vay), [Graf](/source/Graf) [Berchtold](/source/Berchtold), Graf [Nemes](/source/Nemes), Graf [Vécsey](/source/V%C3%A9csey), Graf [Benyovszky](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Benyovszky&action=edit&redlink=1), Graf [Czebrián](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Czebri%C3%A1n&action=edit&redlink=1), Graf [Pongrácz](/source/Pongr%C3%A1cz) and the Graf [Teleki family](/source/Teleki) were built in the 19th century.

During the [Revolution of 1848](/source/The_Revolutions_of_1848_in_the_Habsburg_areas), Solt was an important camp of the Hungarian soldiers.

### 20th Century

[Hungary](/source/Hungary) lost both [world wars](/source/World_wars) which caused death and destruction in Solt. Afterwards, the country was occupied by the [Soviet](/source/Soviet_Union) army and [communism](/source/Communism) spread quickly. Finally, after 1989, Hungary regained its independence and Solt started to rise again. The town is now home to many independent [businesses](/source/Business).

In 1977, a 2000 kW medium-wave broadcasting station called [Transmitter Solt](/source/Transmitter_Solt) was built. It is currently the most powerful radio transmitter in Europe.
