# Soldier River

The **Soldier River** is a [tributary](/source/Tributary) of the [Missouri River](/source/Missouri_River), about 67 miles (108 km) long,[2] in western [Iowa](/source/Iowa) in the [United States](/source/United_States). Several portions of the river's course have been straightened and [channelized](/source/River_engineering#Channelization).

The Soldier River rises in southeastern [Ida County](/source/Ida_County,_Iowa) and flows generally southwestwardly through northwestern [Crawford](/source/Crawford_County,_Iowa), southeastern [Monona](/source/Monona_County,_Iowa) and northwestern [Harrison](/source/Harrison_County,_Iowa) Counties, past the towns of [Ute](/source/Ute,_Iowa), [Soldier](/source/Soldier,_Iowa), [Moorhead](/source/Moorhead,_Iowa) and [Pisgah](/source/Pisgah,_Iowa). It flows into the Missouri River via a diversion channel about 5 mi (8 km) west-northwest of [Mondamin](/source/Mondamin,_Iowa).

At Ute, the river collects the **East Soldier River**, which rises near [Schleswig](/source/Schleswig,_Iowa) and flows past [Charter Oak](/source/Charter_Oak,_Iowa). The East Soldier River collects the **Middle Soldier River**, which flows past [Ricketts](/source/Ricketts,_Iowa).
