A total [solar eclipse](/source/Solar_eclipse) will occur at the Moon's [descending node](/source/Lunar_node) of orbit on Wednesday, September 3, 2081,[1] with a [magnitude](/source/Magnitude_of_eclipse) of 1.072. A [solar eclipse](/source/Solar_eclipse) occurs when the [Moon](/source/Moon) passes between [Earth](/source/Earth) and the [Sun](/source/Sun), thereby totally or partly obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon's [apparent diameter](/source/Apparent_diameter) is larger than the Sun's, blocking all direct sunlight, turning day into darkness. Totality occurs in a narrow path across Earth's surface, with the partial solar eclipse visible over a surrounding region thousands of kilometres wide. Occurring about 5 hours before [perigee](/source/Apsis) (on September 3, 2081, at 14:05 UTC), the Moon's apparent diameter will be larger.[2]
