## Career

She has participated in over hundreds of main class events including [2004 Summer Olympics](/source/2004_Summer_Olympics) [sailing competition](/source/Sailing_at_the_2004_Summer_Olympics), where she won the gold medal in the women's double-handed dinghy event in the 470 with her pair [Emilia Tsoulfa](/source/Emilia_Tsoulfa) (Greece). After a serious back injury, she won a bronze medal in the [yngling](/source/Yngling_(keelboat)) keelboat class at the [2008 Summer Olympics](/source/2008_Summer_Olympics).[1]

Bekatorou was the first female [flag bearer](/source/List_of_flag_bearers_for_Greece_at_the_Olympics) for Greece in the history of Summer Olympics at the [2016 Summer Olympics](/source/2016_Summer_Olympics) in [Rio de Janeiro](/source/Rio_de_Janeiro), participating in the Olympic Games for the 4th time.[2] She and partner [Mike Pateniotis](/source/Mike_Pateniotis) competed in the [Nacra 17](/source/Sailing_at_the_2016_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Nacra_17) event. ## #MeTinSofia

Main article: [MeToo § Greece](/source/MeToo#Greece)

Bekatorou started the Hellenic [#MeToo](#MeToo) movement (#MeTinSofia) after revealing a sexual harassment and abuse episode involving a senior [Hellenic Sailing Federation](/source/Hellenic_Sailing_Federation) (HSF) member in his hotel room, shortly after trials for the [2000 Sydney Olympics](/source/2000_Sydney_Olympics). Soon, the senior was revealed to be Aristides Adamopoulos, the vice-president of HSF and also, a member of the [New Democracy](/source/New_Democracy_(Greece)) political party. The interview triggered a wave of resignations in the HSF and echoed massively across Greece and eventually inspired Zeta Douka and a number of other actors to come forward with their own stories of sexual harassment and abuse.[4][5][6][7][8][9]

## Politics

Sofia Bekatorou was a candidate in the 2024 [European Parliament](/source/European_Parliament) elections with the [SYRIZA](/source/Syriza) party.[10]
