Browne was born in Robert's Tenantry, [St Michael](/source/Saint_Michael%2C_Barbados), [Barbados](/source/Barbados).  A right-arm [medium pace](/source/Medium_pace_bowling) bowler and right-handed batsman, he played [first-class cricket](/source/first-class_cricket) for [Barbados](/source/Barbados_national_cricket_team) and [British Guiana](/source/Guyana_national_cricket_team) in a career that extended from 1909 to 1938. He toured England in [1923](/source/West_Indian_cricket_team_in_England_in_1923), when no Tests were played, and again in [1928](/source/West_Indian_cricket_team_in_England_in_1928). He played two Tests on the 1928 tour and two at home when England visited the [West Indies in 1929-30](/source/English_cricket_team_in_the_West_Indies_in_1929%E2%80%9330).<ref name=WCA/>

At one time he was a magistrate in [British Guiana](/source/British_Guiana). He was the first West Indian to be elected an honorary life member of the [Marylebone Cricket Club](/source/Marylebone_Cricket_Club). He died in [Georgetown](/source/Georgetown%2C_Guyana), British Guiana, aged 73 years.<ref name=WCA/>
