'''Snom Technology GmbH''' {{IPAc-en|s|n|ʊ|m}} is a German company which manufactures [Voice over Internet Protocol](/source/Voice_over_Internet_Protocol) (VoIP) [telephones](/source/telephones), based on the [IETF](/source/IETF) standard [Session Initiation Protocol](/source/Session_Initiation_Protocol) (SIP). Snom's products are targeted at the small- to medium-sized business sector, [home office](/source/home_office)s, [Internet service providers](/source/Internet_service_providers), [carriers](/source/Common_carrier), and [original equipment manufacturer](/source/original_equipment_manufacturer)s. The company, founded in 1996 and headquartered in [Berlin](/source/Berlin), is a wholly owned subsidiary of [VTech Holdings Limited](/source/VTech), since 2016.

==History==
Snom was founded in 1997 in Berlin, Germany, by Christian Stredicke and Nicolas-Peter Pohland, former computer scientists at [Technische Universität Berlin](/source/Technische_Universit%C3%A4t_Berlin).<ref name=snom100>{{cite web|title=Device Profile: snom 100 VoIP phone|url=https://linuxdevices.org/device-profile-snom-100-voip-phone-a/|publisher=LinuxDevices|date=2002-05-15|access-date=2020-06-20}}</ref> In 1999, the company began producing VoIP telephones with the introduction of the ''snom 100'' model.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.snom.com/en/company/history/|title=snom's milestones|publisher=snom|access-date=2009-05-25|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130128193722/http://www.snom.com/en/company/history/|archive-date=2013-01-28|df=}}</ref> By 2000, the company focussed on a vision to make interoperable components for enterprise communication systems. Instead of selling one telephony platform solution, the company emphasized stand-alone VoIP phones that are compatible across standards-based platforms from different vendors, which became possible with the introduction of the [Session Initiation Protocol](/source/Session_Initiation_Protocol) (SIP) that had recently been standardized in the [Internet Engineering Task Force](/source/Internet_Engineering_Task_Force) (IETF).

In 2001, Snom started a joint venture in [Bangalore](/source/Bangalore), India. After some attempts to develop parts of the product in India, this office shifted to a focus in sales. In 2006, Snom opened an office in [North Andover, Massachusetts](/source/North_Andover%2C_Massachusetts) to enter the North American market. In 2008, Snom Italy SRL was founded,<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.snom.com/en/company/history#c23012|title=snom Italy SRL founded|publisher=snom|access-date=2012-12-12|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130128193722/http://www.snom.com/en/company/history/#c23012|archive-date=2013-01-28|df=}}</ref> in 2009 Snom France SARL<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.snom.com/en/company/history#c23013|title=snom France SARL founded|publisher=snom|access-date=2012-12-12|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130128193722/http://www.snom.com/en/company/history/#c23013|archive-date=2013-01-28|df=}}</ref> and in 2010 snom UK Ltd.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.snom.com/en/company/history#c23014|title=snom UK Ltd. founded|publisher=snom|access-date=2012-12-12|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130128193722/http://www.snom.com/en/company/history/#c23014|archive-date=2013-01-28|df=}}</ref> Distributors network include companies in EMEA, CIS region, North America and Australia.

In late 2016, Snom Technology AG was acquired by [VTech Holdings Limited](/source/VTech). The transaction was completed on 21 November 2016.<ref>{{cite press release|url=https://www.vtech.com/en/press_release/2016/vtech-completes-acquisition-german-based-snom-technology-ag/|title=VTech Completes Acquisition of German-based Snom Technology AG|publisher=VTech|accessdate=2017-01-19}}</ref><ref>{{cite press release|url=https://www.snom.com/press/vtech-completes-acquisition-german-based-snom-tech/|title=VTech Completes Acquisition of German-based Snom Technology AG|publisher=Snom|accessdate=2017-01-19|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170710061625/https://www.snom.com/press/vtech-completes-acquisition-german-based-snom-tech/|archive-date=2017-07-10}}</ref>

==Products==
The snom 100 VoIP desk telephone was one of the first commercial voice-over-IP telephones in the telecommunication sector.<ref name=snom100/><ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.snom.com/en/company/history/|title=snom's milestones|publisher=snom|access-date=2009-05-25|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130128193722/http://www.snom.com/en/company/history/|archive-date=2013-01-28|df=}}</ref> The phone was initially based on the [H.323](/source/H.323) protocol, but was equipped with support for the [Session Initiation Protocol](/source/Session_Initiation_Protocol) the following year, as SIP matured technologically, and gained international recognition in the IETF community. A followup model was the snom 105, which added a second Ethernet interface to permit chaining the telephone to a desk top computer to use only a single network drop cable at the office station.

The snom 105 was followed by a series of 200-type desk telephones that featured a major dimensional redesign with a new handset and two sizes of LCD displays. Produced were the model 200 and 220.<ref>{{cite web|title=Device Profile:Snom 220 enterprise VoIP phone|url=https://linuxdevices.org/device-profile-snom-220-enterprise-voip-phone/|publisher=LinuxDevices|date=2004-08-10|access-date=2020-06-20}}</ref> Another 100-series set, the snom 190, with the same form factor of the 200, concluded this technology level in the Fall of 2004, and paved the way for the 300-series released in Winter 2004.<ref name=snom-190-300>{{cite web|title=Snom embeds Linux in business VoIP phone|url=https://linuxdevices.org/snom-embeds-linux-in-business-voip-phone/|publisher=LinuxDevices|date=2005-02-03|access-date=2020-06-20}}</ref>

All of snom's [software](/source/software) exists in the [firmware](/source/firmware) of its phones, and VoIP telephones support all common standards, as well as the latest technologies for [traversal](/source/NAT_traversal) of [network address translator](/source/network_address_translator)s (NAT), [telephone number mapping](/source/telephone_number_mapping) (ENUM), and [virtual private network](/source/virtual_private_network)s (VPN).

All snom phones are compatible with SIP-based telephone systems and system components, including [open source](/source/open_source) platforms such as [Asterisk](/source/Asterisk_(PBX)), [SER](/source/SIP_Express_Router_(SER)), [sipX](/source/sipX)ecs, and [IP-PBX](/source/IP-PBX) systems offered by companies such as [BroadSoft](/source/BroadSoft), Epygi (Quadro IP PBX), [MetaSwitch](/source/MetaSwitch), Pandora (Worksmart), [ADTRAN](/source/ADTRAN) (NetVanta UC Server), pbxnsip, Sylantro, [Sangoma Technologies Corporation](/source/Sangoma_Technologies_Corporation), and others.

Snom's phones include security features based on the two VoIP security standards [SIPs](/source/Session_Initiation_Protocol) ([https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5246 RFC 5246]) and [SRTP](/source/Secure_Real-time_Transport_Protocol) ([https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3711 RFC 3711]). Some devices also support virtual private networking and wireless encryption ([WEP](/source/Wired_Equivalent_Privacy)/[WPA](/source/Wi-Fi_Protected_Access)).
