This species is native to western Mexico, including southern Zacatecas, northern Aguascalientes, and southern Nayarit, and south to western Jalisco and northwestern Colima. It inhabits the basins of the [Ameca](/source/Ameca_River), [Armeria](/source/Armeria_River), and [Grande de Santiago](/source/R%C3%ADo_Grande_de_Santiago) rivers, between 350 and 2,400 meters elevation.<ref name="iucn status 15 November 2021"/>

Its natural [habitat](/source/habitat)s are temperate [forest](/source/forest)s, [subtropical](/source/subtropical) or tropical moist [montane forest](/source/montane_forest)s, and [river](/source/river)s.
