# Smith Henderson

**Smith Henderson** is an American fiction writer, and is the author of the [novels](/source/Novels) *Fourth of July Creek* and (with Jon Marc Smith) *Make Them Cry*, as well as [short stories](/source/Short_story) published in *[Best American Short Stories](/source/The_Best_American_Short_Stories_2016)*, *[Tin House](/source/Tin_House)*, *[American Short Fiction](/source/American_Short_Fiction)*, *[One Story](/source/One_Story)*, and *[Witness](/source/Witness)*.

His debut novel *Fourth of July Creek* was a bestseller and was named a Notable Book by the *New York Times*[1] and the third best novel of the year according to *Entertainment Weekly*.[2]

## Biography

Before becoming a novelist, Henderson studied classics at the [University of Montana](/source/University_of_Montana), then moved to Texas to work as a social worker and a prison guard.[3] He also worked in advertising, helping to produce the [Clint Eastwood/"Halftime in America" commercial](/source/Halftime_in_America) for [Chrysler](/source/Chrysler) that aired in February 2012 during [halftime](/source/Half-time) of [Super Bowl XLVI](/source/Super_Bowl_XLVI).[4]
