The concept for ''Slotherhouse'' originated when the film's co-writer, Bradley Fowler, tried to come up with the "dumbest idea" he could think of. Cady Lanigan described the concept as "like ''[Mean Girls](/source/Mean_Girls)'' meets ''[Happy Death Day](/source/Happy_Death_Day)'' with a touch of ''[Gremlins](/source/Gremlins)''".<ref>{{Cite web |last=Thompson |first=Simon |title=The Team Behind Horror Comedy ''Slotherhouse'' Came Up With The Title In Seconds |url=https://www.forbes.com/sites/simonthompson/2023/08/30/the-team-behind-horror-comedy-slotherhouse-came-up-with-the-title-in-seconds/ |access-date=2023-09-20 |website=[Forbes](/source/Forbes)}}</ref> Lanigan stated that the film was inspired by classic horror films and their use of practical effects.<ref name="BD">{{Cite web |last=Squires |first=John |date=2023-07-26 |title=''Slotherhouse'' – Killer Sloth Slasher Movie Coming to Theaters This Summer |url=https://bloody-disgusting.com/movie/3770855/slotherhouse-killer-sloth-horror-movie/ |access-date=2023-09-20 |website=[Bloody Disgusting](/source/Bloody_Disgusting)}}</ref>
