[Slayer](/source/Slayer) is an American [thrash metal](/source/Thrash_metal) band formed in 1981 by guitarists [Kerry King](/source/Kerry_King) and [Jeff Hanneman](/source/Jeff_Hanneman), who recruited vocalist and bassist [Tom Araya](/source/Tom_Araya), and drummer [Dave Lombardo](/source/Dave_Lombardo).[1] Slayer's first two albums, *[Show No Mercy](/source/Show_No_Mercy)* (1983) and *[Hell Awaits](/source/Hell_Awaits)* (1985), which were released on [Metal Blade Records](/source/Metal_Blade_Records), did not chart in the United States.[2] The band was then signed to [Def Jam Recordings](/source/Def_Jam_Recordings) by [Rick Rubin](/source/Rick_Rubin), who produced *[Reign in Blood](/source/Reign_in_Blood)* (1986). The album helped Slayer break into the [*Billboard* 200](/source/Billboard_200) for the first time, peaking at number 94.[2] After *[South of Heaven](/source/South_of_Heaven)* (1988), Slayer signed to Rubin's new label, [Def American](/source/Def_American), and released *[Seasons in the Abyss](/source/Seasons_in_the_Abyss)* (1990). After the album was released, Lombardo departed Slayer and was replaced by [Paul Bostaph](/source/Paul_Bostaph).[3]

1994's *[Divine Intervention](/source/Divine_Intervention_(Slayer_album))*, the first album to feature Bostaph, peaked at number eight in the US, the band's best chart performance at the time.[2] *[Diabolus in Musica](/source/Diabolus_in_Musica)* (1998) was criticized for its [nu metal](/source/Nu_metal) traits,[4][5] while *[God Hates Us All](/source/God_Hates_Us_All)* (2001) created controversy for its graphic artwork.[6] Bostaph left the band due to an injury and was replaced by former member Lombardo. *[Christ Illusion](/source/Christ_Illusion)* (2006) was Slayer's highest debuting effort on the charts, placing at number five in the US and winning two [Grammy Awards](/source/Grammy_Award).[2][7] Slayer sold 5 million copies in the United States from 1991 to 2013, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and over 20 million worldwide.[8][9] Slayer is considered one of the "big four" of thrash metal along with [Anthrax](/source/Anthrax_(American_band)), [Metallica](/source/Metallica) and [Megadeth](/source/Megadeth) and has earned six gold certifications and one multi-platinum plaque from the [Recording Industry Association of America](/source/Recording_Industry_Association_of_America) (RIAA).[10][11]
