Long was born and raised in [Wichita](/source/Wichita%2C_Kansas), [Kansas](/source/Kansas), and he played in the late 1920s and early 1930s with Cass Hagan (1928),<ref name=grove/> Ed Farley, and [Mike Riley](/source/Mike_Riley_(musician)) (1935).<ref name=grove/> He then moved to [New York City](/source/New_York_City), where he played with [Red Norvo](/source/Red_Norvo) (spring 1936),<ref name=grove/> [Chauncey Morehouse](/source/Chauncey_Morehouse) (spring 1938),<ref name=grove/> [Vincent Lopez](/source/Vincent_Lopez) (early 1937),<ref name=grove/> and [Bud Freeman](/source/Bud_Freeman) (at [Kelly’s Stable](/source/Kelly's_Stables_(New_York_City)), New York, 1939).<ref name=grove/> He worked in the early 1940s with [Bobby Hackett](/source/Bobby_Hackett) (late 1940)<ref name=grove/> Ted Lews,<ref name=grove/> and [Raymond Scott](/source/Raymond_Scott),<ref name=grove/>
