## History

Established in 1367, it has always been a town with handicraft, in particular cloth weaving up to the 19th century.[3] It was a [private town](/source/Private_town) of [Polish nobility](/source/Szlachta), administratively located in the Gniezno County in the [Kalisz Voivodeship](/source/Kalisz_Voivodeship_(1314%E2%80%931793)) in the [Greater Poland Province](/source/Greater_Poland_Province%2C_Crown_of_the_Kingdom_of_Poland) of the Kingdom of Poland.[4] The town's coat of arms comes from the [Lubicz coat of arms](/source/Lubicz_coat_of_arms) of local Polish nobility.

During the joint German-Soviet [invasion of Poland](/source/Invasion_of_Poland), which began [World War II](/source/World_War_II) in September 1939, the town was invaded and then [occupied by Germany](/source/Occupation_of_Poland_(1939%E2%80%931945)) until 1945. It was annexed directly into [Nazi Germany](/source/Nazi_Germany) and made part of the newly formed province of [Reichsgau Wartheland](/source/Reichsgau_Wartheland). In September 1940, the Germans established the [Oflag XXI-A](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Oflag_XXI-A&action=edit&redlink=1) [prisoner-of-war camp](/source/German_prisoner-of-war_camps_in_World_War_II) for [French officers](/source/French_prisoners_of_war_in_World_War_II), however, in 1941 it was relocated to [Babruysk](/source/Babruysk).[5] In Skoki the occupiers then founded the [Oflag XXI-C](/source/Oflag_XXI-C) POW camp for [Polish](/source/Polish_people) officers in March 1942, which in 1943 was relocated to [Ostrzeszów](/source/Ostrzesz%C3%B3w).[5]
