**Skodje Church** ([Norwegian](/source/Norwegian_language): *Skodje kyrkje*) is a [parish church](/source/Parish_church) of the [Church of Norway](/source/Church_of_Norway) in [Ålesund Municipality](/source/%C3%85lesund_Municipality) in [Møre og Romsdal](/source/M%C3%B8re_og_Romsdal) county, [Norway](/source/Norway). It is located in the [village of Skodje](/source/Skodje_(village)). It is the church for the Skodje [parish](/source/Parish) which is part of the [Nordre Sunnmøre prosti](/source/Nordre_Sunnm%C3%B8re_prosti) ([deanery](/source/Deanery)) in the [Diocese of Møre](/source/Diocese_of_M%C3%B8re). The white, wooden church was built in a [long church](/source/Long_church) design in 1860 using plans drawn up by the [architect](/source/Architect) [Fritz Meinhardt](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fritz_Meinhardt&action=edit&redlink=1). The church seats about 330 people.[1][2]

## History

The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to 1432, but the church was not new that year. The first church in Skodje was a wooden [stave church](/source/Stave_church) that may have been built in 14th century. The church was originally a [long church](/source/Long_church) design, but some time during the early-1600s, the church was remodeled by adding a [timber-framed](/source/Timber-framed) [transepts](/source/Transept) to the north and south sides of the [nave](/source/Nave) which ultimately created a [cruciform](/source/Cruciform) floor plan. In 1750 the old church was in such poor condition that it was torn down and a new [timber-framed](/source/Timber-framed), [cruciform](/source/Cruciform) church was built on the same site. In 1859 this church too was torn down, and the present church building was constructed. This new church was designed by [Fritz Meinhardt](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fritz_Meinhardt&action=edit&redlink=1) and built by the builders Gjert Lien and Alias Tonning. The new church was [consecrated](/source/Consecrated) in 1860.[3][4]
