**Skjold** is a [former municipality](/source/List_of_former_municipalities_of_Norway) in [Rogaland](/source/Rogaland) county, [Norway](/source/Norway). The 171.7-square-kilometre (66.3 sq mi) municipality existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 1965. The area is now divided between [Tysvær Municipality](/source/Tysv%C3%A6r_Municipality) and [Vindafjord Municipality](/source/Vindafjord_Municipality) in the [traditional district](/source/Traditional_districts_of_Norway) of [Haugaland](/source/Haugaland). The [administrative centre](/source/Administrative_centre) was the village of [Skjold](/source/Skjold%2C_Rogaland).[6]

Prior to its dissolution in 1965, the 171.7-square-kilometre (66.3 sq mi) municipality was the 357th largest by area out of the 525 municipalities in Norway. Skjold Municipality was the 353rd most populous municipality in Norway with a population of about 2,419. The municipality's [population density](/source/Population_density) was 14.1 inhabitants per square kilometre (37/sq mi) and its population had increased by 0.9% over the previous 10-year period.[7][8]

## General information

The [parish](/source/Prestegjeld) of Skjold was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see [formannskapsdistrikt](/source/Formannskapsdistrikt) law). In 1849, Skjold Municipality was divided as follows: the southwestern half (population: 2,058) became the new [Tysvær Municipality](/source/Tysv%C3%A6r_Municipality) and the northeastern half (population: 3,439) remained as a smaller Skjold Municipality.[9]

In 1891, Skjold Municipality was divided again: the eastern district (population: 1,095) became the new [Vats Municipality](/source/Vats_Municipality) and the western district (population: 1,961) remained as a smaller Skjold Municipality.[9]

During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of the [Schei Committee](/source/Schei_Committee), including some changes to Skjold Municipality. On 1 January 1964, a small part of Skjold Municipality located north of the Ålfjorden (population: 24) was transferred to [Sveio Municipality](/source/Sveio_Municipality) in [Hordaland](/source/Hordaland) county. Then on 1 January 1965, Skjold Municipality was dissolved and its lands were divided as follows:[9]

- the districts of Liarheim and Langeland (population: 1,262), mostly located north and east of the Grindafjorden were merged with [Sandeid Municipality](/source/Sandeid_Municipality) and parts of [Imsland Municipality](/source/Imsland_Municipality), [Vats Municipality](/source/Vats_Municipality), and [Vikedal Municipality](/source/Vikedal_Municipality) to create the new [Vindafjord Municipality](/source/Vindafjord_Municipality)[9]

- the districts of Dueland, [Grinde](/source/Grinde%2C_Rogaland), and [Yrkje](/source/Yrkje) (population: 1,133), mostly located south and west of the Grindafjorden and Skjoldafjorden, were merged with [Tysvær Municipality](/source/Tysv%C3%A6r_Municipality) and [Nedstrand Municipality](/source/Nedstrand_Municipality) and parts of [Avaldsnes Municipality](/source/Avaldsnes_Municipality), [Vats Municipality](/source/Vats_Municipality), and [Vikedal Municipality](/source/Vikedal_Municipality) to form the new, larger [Tysvær Municipality](/source/Tysv%C3%A6r_Municipality).[9]

### Name

The municipality (originally the [parish](/source/Prestegjeld)) is named after the old *[Skjold](/source/Skjold%2C_Rogaland)* farm ([Old Norse](/source/Old_Norse_language): *Skjǫldr*) since the first [Skjold Church](/source/Skjold_Church%2C_Rogaland) was built there. The name is identical to the word *[skjǫldr](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/skj%C7%ABldr#Old_Norse)* which means "shield".[10][6]

### Churches

The [Church of Norway](/source/Church_of_Norway) had one parish (*sokn*) within Skjold Municipality. At the time of the municipal dissolution, it was part of the Skjold [prestegjeld](/source/Prestegjeld) and the [Karmsund prosti](/source/Karmsund_prosti) ([deanery](/source/Deanery)) in the [Diocese of Stavanger](/source/Diocese_of_Stavanger).[8]

## Geography

The municipality encompassed all the area surrounding the Grindafjorden and [Skjoldafjorden](/source/Skjoldafjorden). The highest point in the municipality was the 630-metre (2,070 ft) tall mountain Lammanuten, located on the border with [Nedstrand Municipality](/source/Nedstrand_Municipality).[1] [Ølen Municipality](/source/%C3%98len_Municipality) (in [Hordaland](/source/Hordaland) county) was located to the north, [Vats Municipality](/source/Vats_Municipality) was located to the east, [Nedstrand Municipality](/source/Nedstrand_Municipality) was located to the southeast, [Tysvær Municipality](/source/Tysv%C3%A6r_Municipality) was located to the southwest, [Avaldsnes Municipality](/source/Avaldsnes_Municipality) was located to the west, [Haugesund Municipality](/source/Haugesund_Municipality) was located to the west-northwest, and [Vikebygd Municipality](/source/Vikebygd_Municipality) (in Hordaland county) was located to the northwest.

## Government

While it existed, Skjold Municipality was responsible for [primary education](/source/Primary_education) (through 10th grade), outpatient [health services](/source/Health_care), [senior citizen](/source/Old_age) services, [welfare](/source/Welfare_spending) and other [social services](/source/Social_work), [zoning](/source/Zoning), [economic development](/source/Economic_development), and municipal [roads](/source/Road) and utilities. The municipality was governed by a [municipal council](/source/Municipal_council_(Norway)) of [directly elected](/source/Direct_election) representatives. The [mayor](/source/Mayor) was [indirectly elected](/source/Indirect_election) by a vote of the municipal council.[11] The municipality was under the jurisdiction of the [Karmsund District Court](/source/Karmsund_District_Court) and the [Gulating Court of Appeal](/source/Gulating_Court_of_Appeal).
