The book advocates a purely [vegan](/source/veganism) diet and includes sections on [factory farming](/source/factory_farming) and [animal cruelty](/source/animal_cruelty). In addition to advocating a vegan diet, the authors also say that one should avoid [smoking](/source/smoking), [alcohol](/source/alcohol_(drug)), [caffeine](/source/caffeine), chemical additives (such as [aspartame](/source/aspartame)) and [refined sugar](/source/refined_sugar). Reactions to the book have been mixed. ''[The New York Times](/source/The_New_York_Times)'' reported the lead buyer at retailer Shakespeare & Company saying: "It's definitely the most entertaining diet book I've ever read", and that it "had sold 'extremely well' in the stores."<ref name ="NY Times"/> They also quote the co-owner of a bookshop as saying:
