Skindergade

**Skindergade** is a street in [central](/source/Indre_By) [Copenhagen](/source/Copenhagen), [Denmark](/source/Denmark). Running roughly parallel to [Strøget](/source/Str%C3%B8get), to which it is connected through [Jorcks Passage](/source/Jorcks_Passage), it extends for approximately 400 metres from [Gammeltorv](/source/Gammeltorv) to [Købmagergade](/source/K%C3%B8bmagergade).

## History

Its name dates back to the 15th century when it was a venue for [leather craftsmen](/source/Leather_crafting) (*skinder-* derives from [Danish](/source/Danish_language) "Skind", meaning *[skin](/source/Rawhide_(textile))*) such as [skinners](/source/Skinner_(profession)), [glovers](/source/Glove), [purse](/source/Hand_bag)-, [saddle](/source/Saddle)- and [shoemakers](/source/Shoemaking).[1]

## Notable buildings and residents

The old part of Pressens Hus

No. 8 Skindergade

[Pressens Hus](/source/Pressens_Hus) at No. 5–7 is home to the [Danish Media Association](/source/Danish_Media_Association). It is a former commerce house from 1902, expanded with a glazed extension by [Erik Korshagen](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Erik_Korshagen&action=edit&redlink=1) in 1976.[2]

[Kunstnerkollegiet](/source/Kunstnerkollegiet) is located at No. 34. N. 45-47 was built for [Georg Bestle](/source/Georg_Bestle)'s wine trading house. The rounded pediment features a relief of Neptune and Mercury.

## Memorial plaque

The facade of no. 44 bears a memorial stone over six named members of [Holger Danske](/source/Holger_Danske_(resistance_group)) who in 1945 were arrested there by [Gestapo](/source/Gestapo) and subsequently executed in [Ryvangen](/source/Ryvangen_Memorial_Park).[3]
