**Sivia** is a town in central Peru, capital of the [Sivia District](/source/Sivia_District) in [Huanta Province](/source/Huanta_Province), [Ayacucho Region](/source/Ayacucho_Region).[1] It is on the west bank of the [Apurímac River](/source/Apur%C3%ADmac_River), about 3 km (1.9 mi) from the town of [Pichari](/source/Pichari), capital of the [Pichari District](/source/Pichari_District), [La Convención Province](/source/La_Convenci%C3%B3n_Province), [Cusco Region](/source/Cusco_Region), on the other side of the river.[1] Both towns are in the zone known as the Valley of the Apurímac and Ene River (*[Valle de los Ríos Apurímac y Ene](/source/Valle_de_los_R%C3%ADos_Apur%C3%ADmac_y_Ene)*, or VRAE). The VRAE is an area of such high childhood malnutrition and poverty that the government of Peru selected the VRAE to launch its [National Strategy for Growth](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=National_Strategy_for_Growth_(Peru)&action=edit&redlink=1) program in 2007.[2] The VRAE is a major center of [coca](/source/Coca) production.[3]
