- ***Common names**: ground [rattlesnakes](/source/Rattlesnake), pygmy rattlesnakes, massasaugas*[2]

***Sistrurus*** is a [genus](/source/Genus) of [pit vipers](/source/Pit_viper) in the [subfamily](/source/Subfamily) [Crotalinae](/source/Crotalinae) of the [family](/source/Family_(taxonomy)) [Viperidae](/source/Viperidae). The genus is [endemic](/source/Endemism) to [Canada](/source/Canada), the [United States](/source/United_States), and [Mexico](/source/Mexico).[1] Its [generic](/source/Genus) name is a [Latinized](/source/Latin_language) form of the [Greek](/source/Greek_language) word for "tail rattler" (Σείστρουρος, *seistrouros*) and shares its root with the ancient [Egyptian](/source/Egypt) musical instrument, the [sistrum](/source/Sistrum), a type of rattle.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] Three [species](/source/Species) are currently recognized.[3]

## Description

Difference in head scalation between snakes of the genus *Crotalus* and the genus *Sistrurus*.

*Sistrurus* species differ from the larger rattlesnakes of the genus *[Crotalus](/source/Crotalus)* in a number of ways. They are smaller in size, but also their [scalation](/source/Scale_(zoology)) is different: *Sistrurus* species have nine large head plates (same as *[Agkistrodon](/source/Agkistrodon)*), whereas in *Crotalus* (and almost all other viperids), the head is mostly covered with a large number of smaller scales. *Sistrurus* species have a relatively small rattle that produces more of a high-pitched, buzzing sound than does a larger rattle, like that of *Crotalus*.

## Geographic range

Species of *Sistrurus* are found in Canada, the [Western](/source/Western_United_States), [Southern](/source/Southern_United_States), and [Midwestern United States](/source/Midwestern_United_States), and isolated populations in southern and eastern Mexico.[1]

## Venom

Although bites from *Sistrurus* species are regarded as less dangerous to humans than those from *Crotalus* rattlesnakes, primarily due to their lower venom yield, every venomous snake bite should be considered serious, and prompt medical treatment should always be sought.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]
