# Sinployea decorticata

***Sinployea decorticata*** a [species](/source/Species) of small air-breathing [land snail](/source/Land_snail), a [terrestrial](/source/Terrestrial_animal) [pulmonate](/source/Pulmonate) [gastropod](/source/Gastropod) [mollusk](/source/Mollusk) in the family [Charopidae](/source/Charopidae). This species was [endemic](/source/Endemism) to the [Cook Islands](/source/List_of_non-marine_molluscs_of_the_Cook_Islands); it is now [extinct](/source/Extinct).

## Shell description

*Sinployea decorticata* was originally discovered and described under the name *Pitys decorticata* by American naturalist [Andrew Garrett](/source/Andrew_Garrett_(explorer)) in 1872.[1]

Garrett's original text (the [type description](/source/Type_description)) reads as follows:

[Shell](/source/Gastropod_shell) subdiscoid, openly umbilicate, thin, subpellucid, cinereous, under a brownish horn-colored epidermis, adults decorticated, rarely with radiating dashes of reddish brown, arcuately ribbed, ribs lamellar, regular, rather closely set, continued on the base, interstices very finely striated; [spire](/source/Spire_(mollusc)) flatly convex; [suture](/source/Suture_(gastropod)) channeled; [whorls](/source/Whorl_(mollusc)) 5, convex, slowly increasing, last one convexly declivous above, rounded beneath, obsoletely angular on the periphery; [umbilicus](/source/Umbilicus_(mollusc)) deep, exposing the whorls, about a fourth the diameter of the shell; [aperture](/source/Aperture_(mollusc)) oblique, orbicular luniform; peristome thin, simple; parietal region very thinly callosed.

The width of the shell is 4 mm. The height of the shell is 2 mm.[1]

Type specimen are stored in the collection of [Academy of Natural Sciences](/source/Academy_of_Natural_Sciences) in Philadelphia.[1]

## Distribution

[Type locality](/source/Type_locality_(biology)) is [Rarotonga](/source/Rarotonga) Island, [Cook Islands](/source/Cook_Islands).[1]

## Habitat

Andrew Garrett commented on the habitat of this land snail, saying it was, "a common species found on the ground in a mountain ravine".[1]
