He was an early inspiration to [Rossini](/source/Rossini) and [Meyerbeer](/source/Meyerbeer) and taught and advocated for [Donizetti](/source/Donizetti). == Life == He was born in [Mendorf](/source/Mendorf) near [Altmannstein](/source/Altmannstein), [Landkreis Eichstätt](/source/Eichst%C3%A4tt_(district)), [Bavaria](/source/Bavaria), and studied [theology](/source/theology) at the [University of Ingolstadt](/source/University_of_Ingolstadt), continuing his studies in Italy from 1787. He was closely associated with the [Illuminati](/source/Illuminati) of [Adam Weishaupt](/source/Adam_Weishaupt) while a student in Ingolstadt, and the ideals of the [French Enlightenment](/source/Age_of_Enlightenment) were a strong influence on his philosophy as a musician as corroborated by his famed ''Zibaldone'' or "Notebooks" compiled toward the end of his career. Shortly thereafter, he took music lessons with [Carlo Lenzi](/source/Carlo_Lenzi), and later with [Ferdinando Bertoni](/source/Ferdinando_Bertoni). He moved to [Bergamo](/source/Bergamo) in 1802 and was appointed ''[maestro di cappella](/source/maestro_di_cappella)'' at the [Cathedral of Bergamo](/source/Cathedral_of_Bergamo), succeeding his old teacher Lenzi. He held the post until his death, and became a central figure in the city's musical life, organizing concerts and introducing [Ludwig van Beethoven](/source/Ludwig_van_Beethoven)'s music there.
