'''Simon Jenko''' (October 27, 1835 – October 18, 1869) was a [Slovene](/source/Slovenian_language) poet, lyricist and writer.

Jenko was born in [Podreča](/source/Podre%C4%8Da) in the Sora Plain (''Sorško polje'') in [Upper Carniola](/source/Upper_Carniola), then part of the [Austrian Empire](/source/Austrian_Empire), now in [Slovenia](/source/Slovenia), as an [illegitimate son](/source/Illegitimacy) of poor peasant parents. Later he moved with his parents to [Praše](/source/Pra%C5%A1e), which was the very inspiration for most of his poems and short stories. The local clergy enabled him to study in [Novo Mesto](/source/Novo_Mesto), [Klagenfurt](/source/Klagenfurt), and [Ljubljana](/source/Ljubljana). Contrary to their will, however, Jenko decided not to become a priest, but enrolled at the [University of Vienna](/source/University_of_Vienna), where he studied law, [classical philology](/source/classical_philology), and history.

Together with [Fran Levstik](/source/Fran_Levstik), [Josip Jurčič](/source/Josip_Jur%C4%8Di%C4%8D), [Josip Stritar](/source/Josip_Stritar), [Simon Gregorčič](/source/Simon_Gregor%C4%8Di%C4%8D), and [Fran Erjavec](/source/Fran_Erjavec), he belonged to the group of prominent [Slovenes](/source/Slovenes) that embraced a [progressive](/source/Progressivism) and nationalist political ideology (often with [Pan-Slavic](/source/Pan-Slavic) elements) and introduced [literary realism](/source/literary_realism) in [Slovenian literature](/source/Slovenian_literature). He mostly wrote lyrical and patriotic poems, which reveal an influence of late [romanticism](/source/romanticism). He also wrote short [prose](/source/prose) in a realistic style.

He was the cousin of the composer [Davorin Jenko](/source/Davorin_Jenko). The two composed the song ''[Naprej zastava slave](/source/Naprej_zastava_slave)'' together, which used to be the unofficial Slovenian [national anthem](/source/national_anthem) up to the 1980s.

He died in [Kranj](/source/Kranj).
