# Simon Burrows

**Simon Hedley Burrows** (8 November 1928 – 5 August 2015) was the [Bishop of Buckingham](/source/Bishop_of_Buckingham) from 1974 to 1994 and the first [area bishop](/source/Area_bishop) under the diocesan [area scheme](/source/Area_scheme) of 1984.[1]

## Early life

Burrows was born on 8 November 1928. He was the grandson of [Leonard Burrows](/source/Leonard_Burrows) ([Bishop of Sheffield](/source/Bishop_of_Sheffield)) and [Neville Lovett](/source/Neville_Lovett) ([Bishop of Salisbury](/source/Bishop_of_Salisbury))[2] and son of [Hedley Burrows](/source/Hedley_Burrows) ([Dean of Hereford](/source/Dean_of_Hereford)).[3] He was educated at [Eton](/source/Eton_College) and [King's College, Cambridge](/source/King's_College,_Cambridge).

## Ordained ministry

He was made a deacon at [Michaelmas](/source/Michaelmas) 1954 (26 September), by [Cyril Easthaugh](/source/Cyril_Easthaugh), [Bishop of Kensington](/source/Bishop_of_Kensington),[4] and ordained a priest the Michaelmas following (25 September 1955), by [William Wand](/source/William_Wand), [Bishop of London](/source/Bishop_of_London) — both times at [St Paul's Cathedral](/source/St_Paul's_Cathedral).[5] He served his [curacy](/source/Curate) at [St John's Wood](/source/St_John's_Wood), after which he was [Chaplain](/source/Chaplain) of [Jesus College, Cambridge](/source/Jesus_College,_Cambridge).[6] Following this he was [Vicar](/source/Vicar) of [Wyken](/source/Wyken) and then (his final appointment before his ordination to the [episcopate](/source/Episcopate))[7] of [Holy Trinity](/source/Holy_Trinity) [Fareham](/source/Fareham).[8] He was consecrated a bishop on 18 October 1974 by [Michael Ramsey](/source/Michael_Ramsey), [Archbishop of Canterbury](/source/Archbishop_of_Canterbury), at [Westminster Abbey](/source/Westminster_Abbey).[9]

In retirement he continued to serve as an [assistant bishop](/source/Assistant_bishop) in the [Diocese of Winchester](/source/Diocese_of_Winchester) for some time.

## Death

He died on 5 August 2015 due to illness.[10]
