Brotherton was still at school when he began his career with [BBC Local Radio](/source/BBC_Local_Radio) and developed further while he was studying at [Birmingham University](/source/Birmingham_University) where he joined [Birmingham](/source/Birmingham)'s local BBC radio station [WM](/source/BBC_Radio_WM).

In 1990 Brotherton joined the BBC network, where, as well as commentating on the [Premier League](/source/FA_Premier_League), he has commentated on a variety of football tournaments including the [FIFA World Cup](/source/FIFA_World_Cup), [UEFA Euro 1996](/source/UEFA_Euro_1996), [UEFA Euro 2000](/source/UEFA_Euro_2000), [UEFA Euro 2004](/source/UEFA_Euro_2004), [UEFA Euro 2008](/source/UEFA_Euro_2008), [UEFA Euro 2012](/source/UEFA_Euro_2012), [UEFA Euro 2016](/source/UEFA_Euro_2016), the [African Cup of Nations](/source/African_Cup_of_Nations), the [UEFA Champions League Final](/source/UEFA_Champions_League) and the [UEFA Cup](/source/UEFA_Cup)/[UEFA Europa League Final](/source/UEFA_Europa_League).

He has also reported from the [Tour de France](/source/Tour_de_France) races, [Formula One](/source/Formula_One) coverage, World Championship [Boxing](/source/Boxing), [Athletics](/source/Sport_of_athletics) and [Major League Baseball](/source/Major_League_Baseball)'s [World Series](/source/World_Series).

In 2013, he became the lead BBC commentator for the [Track Cycling World Championships](/source/Track_Cycling_World_Championships) and [Olympic Games](/source/Olympic_Games) cycling (from 2016) following [Hugh Porter](/source/Hugh_Porter)'s move to ITV. Brotherton is also the lead [Channel 4](/source/Channel_4) commentator for the [Paralympic Games](/source/Paralympic_Games) cycling (as of 2016).

Brotherton was also commentator at the [2018](/source/2018_Winter_Olympics), [2022](/source/2022_Winter_Olympics) and [2026 Winter Olympics](/source/2026_Winter_Olympics) for the BBC in the [speed skating](/source/Speed_skating_at_the_2018_Winter_Olympics).
