# Simon Angell

**Simon Alexander Angell** is a New Zealand former professional [rugby league](/source/Rugby_league) footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s. He played representative level for [New Zealand](/source/New_Zealand_national_rugby_league_team) and [Canterbury](/source/Canterbury_Rugby_League), and at club level for Hornby (of the [Canterbury Rugby League](/source/Canterbury_Rugby_League)), [Christchurch City](/source/Christchurch_City_Shiners), [Featherstone Rovers](/source/Featherstone_Rovers) and [Salford City Reds](/source/Salford_Red_Devils), as a or .

## Playing career

From the [Hornby club](/source/Hornby_Panthers), Angell played for the [Canterbury](/source/Canterbury_rugby_league_team) side that bet [Auckland](/source/Auckland_rugby_league_team) in 1993, starting in the second row in the Provincial grand final.[2][3]

He played for the [Christchurch City Shiners](/source/Christchurch_City_Shiners) in the [1994 Lion Red Cup](/source/1994_Lion_Red_Cup).[4]

Angell was then signed to the [Auckland Warriors](/source/Auckland_Warriors) in 1995 but did not play in the first grade team. He signed with [Featherstone Rovers](/source/Featherstone_Rovers) for the 1995/96 season but in February 1996 Featherstone had to cut his contract as a cost-cutting measure.[5] Angell played the rest of the 1996 season with the [Salford City Reds](/source/Salford_Red_Devils) and remained there for 1997.[6]

He then returned to Canterbury and resumed his provincial representative career.[7] In 1998 he played for the [Tasman Orcas](/source/Tasman_rugby_league_team) as an import player while playing for the Hornby Panthers in the [Canterbury Rugby League](/source/Canterbury_Rugby_League).[8]

Between 1999 and 2003 Angell played for the Canning Bulldogs in the [Western Australia Rugby League](/source/Western_Australia_Rugby_League) competition.[6][9]

## Representative career

Angell was named in the touring squad for the 1993 [New Zealand national rugby league team](/source/New_Zealand_national_rugby_league_team) tour of Great Britain and France, however Angell did not play a test while on tour.[10] He did however wear the Kiwis colours on several tour matches and is [Kiwi number 651](/source/List_of_New_Zealand_Kiwis_representatives).
