**Silvio Spann** (born 21 August 1981) is a former [Trinidad and Tobagonian](/source/Trinidad_and_Tobago) [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played professionally in countries including Italy, Japan, Croatia and Wales.

Spann is a [midfielder](/source/Midfielder). He is the son of [Leroy Spann](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Leroy_Spann&action=edit&redlink=1), also former Trinidad and Tobago national team player.[2]

## Club career

Spann has played in Italy, for [Perugia](/source/A.C._Perugia) and [Sambenedettese](/source/S.S._Sambenedettese_Calcio). His move to Japan occurred after he failed to get a work permit in England, where [Derby County](/source/Derby_County_F.C.) and [Crystal Palace](/source/Crystal_Palace_F.C.) were both interested in him.

Spann's contract with Japanese club [Yokohama FC](/source/Yokohama_FC) finished just before the [2006 World Cup](/source/2006_World_Cup), forcing him to return home where he re-signed for [W Connection](/source/W_Connection).

It was announced in July 2007 that Spann would be attending a two-week trial with [Sunderland](/source/Sunderland_A.F.C.). He also spent time on trial at [Sheffield United](/source/Sheffield_United_F.C.).[3]

Spann later went on to sign a 3-year contract with Wrexham who play their football in the [Football League Two](/source/Football_League_Two) after international teammates, and former Wrexham players, [Carlos Edwards](/source/Carlos_Edwards) and [Dennis Lawrence](/source/Dennis_Lawrence) gave the club a glowing report.[4] Silvio has been granted the number 16 shirt at Wrexham. He scored his first goal for the club in a 2–1 league defeat to [Notts County](/source/Notts_County_F.C.), a game in which he later got sent off.[5] He was transfer listed by Wrexham in May 2008 following the club's relegation to the [Football Conference](/source/Football_Conference).[6] Despite being transfer listed, he remained with the club until he was released at the end of the 2009–10 season.[7]

## International career

Spann made his international debut against [Barbados](/source/Barbados_national_football_team) in July 2002.[8] Spann had been named in the [Trinidad and Tobago national team](/source/Trinidad_and_Tobago_national_football_team) for the [2006 FIFA World Cup](/source/2006_FIFA_World_Cup) in Germany, but had to drop out after sustaining a hamstring injury in the run-up to the tournament.[9][10]

On 7 June 2007, in the [Gold Cup](/source/CONCACAF_Gold_Cup) Tournament at the [Home Depot Center](/source/Home_Depot_Center), Spann scored a spectacular free kick more than 40 meters out against [El Salvador](/source/El_Salvador_national_football_team), Trinidad & Tobago were defeated 2–1.[11]
