The label began with a project to make the first recording of the complete works of [Thomas Tallis](/source/Thomas_Tallis). 
The artists for the Tallis recording were the Chapelle du Roi, an ensemble of ten singers founded in 1994 by Alistair Dixon, also co-founder of the record label.<ref>Early Music Network & News 1997 "Signum Records SIGGCD001 (71 ' 52") A new record company and an ambitious new project: no less than the complete works of Tallis on nine CDs. Since the Tallis project the label has grown to host many well-known UK ensembles, including [The Kings Singers](/source/The_Kings_Singers), the [Philharmonia Orchestra](/source/Philharmonia_Orchestra), the [Choir of St John's College, Cambridge](/source/Choir_of_St_John's_College%2C_Cambridge), [Huddersfield Choral Society](/source/Huddersfield_Choral_Society), Charivari Agreable, [Tenebrae](/source/Tenebrae_(choir)) directed by Nigel Short, [Voces8](/source/Voces8), [Cantabile](/source/Cantabile_(group)) and the [choir of His Majesty's Chapel Royal](/source/Chapel_Royal), who record at [St James's Palace](/source/St_James's_Palace), London.
