The **Sierra Mazateca** is a mountainous area, part of the [Sierra Madre de Oaxaca](/source/Sierra_Madre_de_Oaxaca) mountain range, located in the northern part of the state of [Oaxaca](/source/Oaxaca) in Southern [Mexico](/source/Mexico). It is named after the [Mazatec](/source/Mazatec) people, who are indigenous to the area.

## Geography

Its western part is within the district of [Teotitlan del Camino](/source/Teotitl%C3%A1n_District%2C_Oaxaca) in the [Cañada Region](/source/Ca%C3%B1ada%2C_Oaxaca); and its eastern part is within the district of [Tuxtepec](/source/Tuxtepec_District%2C_Oaxaca), in the [Papaloapan Region](/source/Papaloapan_Region%2C_Oaxaca).

The main towns of the region are [Huautla de Jimenez](/source/Huautla_de_Jimenez), [Eloxochitlán de Flores Magón](/source/Eloxochitl%C3%A1n_de_Flores_Mag%C3%B3n) and [Jalapa de Díaz](/source/Jalapa_de_D%C3%ADaz).

In 1954 the eastern part of the Sierra Mazateca region was submerged by the construction of the [Miguel Alemán Dam](/source/Miguel_Alem%C3%A1n_Dam), now under [Miguel Alemán Lake](/source/Miguel_Alem%C3%A1n_Lake) reservoir.
