==Early life==
Sian Edwards was born in [West Chiltington](/source/West_Chiltington), [West Sussex](/source/West_Sussex). She studied at [Oxford High School, England](/source/Oxford_High_School%2C_England) (and is still remembered by alumnae for her daring streak through her last school assembly) and then the [Royal Northern College of Music](/source/Royal_Northern_College_of_Music) and later with the conductors [Sir Charles Groves](/source/Charles_Groves), [Ilya Musin](/source/Ilya_Musin_(conductor)) and [Neeme Järvi](/source/Neeme_J%C3%A4rvi). ==Career==
In 1986, Sian conducted opera for the first time, with  [Kurt Weill](/source/Kurt_Weill)'s ''[Mahagonny](/source/Mahagonny)'' for [Scottish Opera](/source/Scottish_Opera). The following year, she conducted ''[La traviata](/source/La_traviata)'' at [Glyndebourne](/source/Glyndebourne_Festival_Opera). In 1988 she conducted the world premiere of [Mark-Anthony Turnage](/source/Mark-Anthony_Turnage)'s opera ''Greek'' at the Munich Festival, and followed it with further performances at the 1988 [Edinburgh Festival](/source/Edinburgh_Festival). In the same year she was the first female conductor engaged by the [Royal Opera House](/source/Royal_Opera_House), [Covent Garden](/source/Covent_Garden), with [Tippett](/source/Michael_Tippett)'s ''[The Knot Garden](/source/The_Knot_Garden)''. She was invited back to conduct ''[Rigoletto](/source/Rigoletto)'', the opening opera of the 1989–90 season<ref name=grove/>

Edwards first appeared at the [English National Opera](/source/English_National_Opera) conducting [Prokofiev](/source/Sergei_Prokofiev)'s ''The Gambler'' in 1990. In 1993 she succeeded [Mark Elder](/source/Mark_Elder) as ENO's  music director. She resigned from the post in December 1995, and has since freelanced. Sian Edwards returned to English National Opera for a new production of Orpheus in the Underworld in October 2019. Sian Edwards is frequently involved with new music projects; as well as regular performances with the [Ensemble Modern](/source/Ensemble_Modern), she also appears with the [London Sinfonietta](/source/London_Sinfonietta), [Ensemble Resonanz](/source/Ensemble_Resonanz) and [Klangforum Wien](/source/Klangforum_Wien) among others. Sian was appointed Head of Conducting at the Royal Academy of Music (RAM) in London in 2013, where she directs the Masters course and the Sorrell Women's Conducting Programme.
