**Shulman** is an [Ashkenazi](/source/Ashkenazi_Jews) [Jewish surname](/source/Jewish_surname) that literally means "[shul](/source/Synagogue)-[man](/source/Man)". A shul is another name for a synagogue, a Jewish house of worship, and the name was usually given to the head of the synagogue or the synagogue's [rabbi](/source/Rabbi). It can also appear as a result of [double transliteration](/source/Double_transliteration), to and from the [Cyrillic alphabet](/source/Cyrillic_alphabet), of the German surname "[Schulmann](/source/Schulman)".
