**Shukhrat Safin** (3 April 1970 – 20 September 2009) was an Uzbekistani [chess](/source/Chess) player. He was awarded the title of [Grandmaster](/source/Grandmaster_(chess)) by [FIDE](/source/FIDE) in 1999.[1]

Safin shared first place with [Mikhail Gurevich](/source/Mikhail_Gurevich_(chess_player)) and [Victor Mikhalevski](/source/Victor_Mikhalevski) in the [Hogeschool Zeeland Tournament](/source/Vlissingen_chess_tournament) in [Vlissingen](/source/Vlissingen). He finished third on tiebreak score.[2] In 2001, Safin won the [Uzbekistani Chess Championship](/source/Uzbekistani_Chess_Championship).[3] In late November of the same year, he took part in the [FIDE World Championship](/source/FIDE_World_Chess_Championship_2002). Here he was knocked out in the first round by [Predrag Nikolić](/source/Predrag_Nikoli%C4%87).[4] In 2002 Safin tied for 1st–3rd with [Mikhail Ulibin](/source/Mikhail_Ulibin) and [Evgeny Gleizerov](/source/Evgeny_Gleizerov) at the Masters tournament of the 12th [Abu Dhabi](/source/Abu_Dhabi) Chess Festival.[5] In 2008 he came third in the [Kolkata](/source/Kolkata) Open.[6] In 2009, he tied for 5th-10th with [Chakkravarthy Deepan](/source/Chakkravarthy_Deepan), [Georgy Timoshenko](/source/Georgy_Timoshenko), [Sundar Shyam](/source/Sundar_Shyam), [Saidali Iuldachev](/source/Saidali_Iuldachev) and [Andrei Deviatkin](/source/Andrei_Deviatkin) in the [Mumbai](/source/Mumbai) Mayor Cup.[7]

Safin played for Uzbekistan's national team in the [Chess Olympiads](/source/Chess_Olympiad) of 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2008, in the [World Team Chess Championship](/source/World_Team_Chess_Championship) 2001 and in the [Asian Team Chess Championships](/source/Asian_Team_Chess_Championship) of 1995 and 2003. In the 1995 event he won two medals: team bronze and individual silver on board four.[8]

He died of blood cancer in his native city of [Samarkand](/source/Samarkand).[1]
