## History

Retropolis Entertainment was founded on April 19, 2002 by Bob Emmer, Garson Foos, and Richard Foos, three principals from [Rhino Records](/source/Rhino_Records),[4] as the company was negotiating with the five majors for distribution. After selling Rhino to [Warner Music Group](/source/Warner_Music_Group) in 1998, the three set out to launch a new retro pop culture label.[5] The company's first product was *Red, White & Rock*, a 2002 joint release with [PBS](/source/PBS) station [WQED-TV](/source/WQED_(TV)) that was produced with [Warner Strategic Marketing](/source/Warner_Strategic_Marketing).[6] In August 2002, Retropolis acquired [Biograph Records](/source/Biograph_Records).[7] Other early releases included blues and jazz CDs from the Biograph label, a [Fats Domino](/source/Fats_Domino) CD and DVD,[8] and several documentaries (*Superstar: The Life And Times of [Andy Warhol](/source/Andy_Warhol)*,[9] *What Happened To Kerouac?*[10]). Retropolis was renamed Shout! Factory in April 2003. At that time, Shout! had signed a press and distribution agreement with [Sony Music Entertainment](/source/Sony_Music_Entertainment).[11] In 2004, Shout! released *[Freaks and Geeks](/source/Freaks_and_Geeks)* on DVD, the first television series released on DVD for the company. With 18 episodes, it became one of the most expensive DVDs to produce, costing over a million dollars in music licensing.[12][13] That same year, they released William Shatner's album *[Has Been](/source/Has_Been)* and *[SCTV](/source/Second_City_Television)* box sets.[14]

In 2004, Shout! released an expanded two-disc version of [Jim Croce](/source/Jim_Croce)'s first record, *[Facets](/source/Facets_(album))*.[15] In 2004, Shout! purchased the rights to the adult animated series *[Home Movies](/source/Home_Movies_(TV_series))* and released each season set, and ultimately a complete series box.[16] Other notable releases included a pair of *[The Electric Company](/source/The_Electric_Company)* multi-disc sets,[17] the re-envisioned [Herb Alpert](/source/Herb_Alpert)'s *Whipped Cream & Other Delights Rewhipped*,[18] a series of *[Elvira's Movie Macabre](/source/Elvira's_Movie_Macabre)* DVDs[19] and the first of what would be three cover CDs with [Matthew Sweet](/source/Matthew_Sweet) and [Susanna Hoffs](/source/Susanna_Hoffs), called *[Under The Covers Vol. 1](/source/Under_the_Covers%2C_Vol._1)*; Sweet himself was also added as a featured solo artist.[20] Shout! acquired the rights to several other television series, including *[Punky Brewster](/source/Punky_Brewster)*,[21] *[The Weird Al Show](/source/The_Weird_Al_Show)*,[22] and *[America's Funniest Home Videos](/source/America's_Funniest_Home_Videos)*.[23]

In 2005, Shout! Factory obtained the rights to Herb Alpert's catalog, launching the Herb Alpert Signature Series of CDs. These included *[The Lonely Bull](/source/The_Lonely_Bull_(album))*, *[South of the Border](/source/South_of_the_Border_(Herb_Alpert's_Tijuana_Brass_album))*, *Lost Treasures*, *[Whipped Cream & Other Delights](/source/Whipped_Cream_%26_Other_Delights)* and others.[24] They also got the rights to talk show host [Dick Cavett](/source/Dick_Cavett)'s library and began releasing theme sets focused on rock icons: [Ray Charles](/source/Ray_Charles) (including all his visits to the show),[25] [John Lennon](/source/John_Lennon) (The Beatles) and [Yoko Ono](/source/Yoko_Ono),[26] and others.[27] They also jumped into children's animation with a deal with [DIC Entertainment](/source/DIC_Entertainment). *[Heathcliff And the Catillac Cats](/source/Heathcliff_(1984_TV_series))* was the first release from that deal, followed by *[The Legend of Zelda](/source/The_Legend_of_Zelda_series)*, *[Super Mario Bros. Super Show](/source/The_Super_Mario_Bros._Super_Show!)*, *[Inspector Gadget](/source/Inspector_Gadget_(1983_TV_series)),* *[Sabrina the Animated Series](/source/Sabrina%3A_The_Animated_Series),*[28] and *[C.O.P.S. The Animated Series](/source/COPS_(animated_TV_series)).*[29] On the sports side, they entered a licensing deal with [Major League Baseball](/source/Major_League_Baseball), releasing themed and [World Series](/source/World_Series) DVDs from 2005 to 2010 and then again from 2016 till present.[30]

By 2007, vintage TV on DVD was a major focus, with season sets of *[Blossom](/source/Blossom_(American_TV_series))*,[31] *[McHale's Navy](/source/McHale's_Navy)*[32] and *[Ironside](/source/Ironside_(1967_TV_series))*,[33] an authorized collection of *[The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet](/source/The_Adventures_of_Ozzie_and_Harriet)*,[34] and themed and actor-specific editions of *[Inside the Actors Studio](/source/Inside_the_Actors_Studio)* hitting shelves.[35] Meanwhile, they also began releasing [Mickey Hart](/source/Mickey_Hart)'s catalogs.[36]

Joe](/source/G.I._Joe%3A_A_Real_American_Hero_(1985_TV_series))* animated-series box sets. That same year, it released the first *[My Little Pony](/source/My_Little_Pony)* DVD, *My Little Pony: Twinkle Wish Collection*.[39] Shout! continued to release several Hasbro properties, including the series *[My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic](/source/My_Little_Pony%3A_Friendship_is_Magic)*,[40] until January 1, 2019, when it released its final DVD for that series, *Hearts and Hooves*.[41]
