'''Shortite''' is a [sodium](/source/sodium)-[calcium](/source/calcium) [carbonate mineral](/source/carbonate_mineral), with the chemical formula Na<sub>2</sub>Ca<sub>2</sub>(CO<sub>3</sub>)<sub>3</sub>. It was discovered by [J. J. Fahey](/source/J._J._Fahey) in [well cuttings](/source/well_cuttings) from the [Green River Formation](/source/Green_River_Formation), [Sweetwater County](/source/Sweetwater_County), [Wyoming](/source/Wyoming), US, and was named to honor [Maxwell N. Short](/source/Maxwell_N._Short) (1889–1952), Professor of [Mineralogy](/source/Mineralogy), [University of Arizona](/source/University_of_Arizona).

Shortite is associated with commercial [trona](/source/trona) ores, and some care must be taken when beneficiating crude trona to avoid contamination with shortite.<ref>McKetta, John  J.
