**Shopiere** is an [unincorporated community](/source/Unincorporated_area#United_States) and [census-designated place](/source/Census-designated_place) in the Town of [Turtle](/source/Turtle%2C_Wisconsin), in [Rock County, Wisconsin](/source/Rock_County%2C_Wisconsin), United States.[2][3] It was first named a CDP at the [2020 census](/source/2020_United_States_census), which showed a population of 154.[4]

## History

The community was originally named Waterloo.[5] The first settlement was made in the 1830s by a colony from Connecticut.[5] The present name is derived from *chaux pierre,* [French](/source/French_language) for [limestone](/source/Limestone), which is abundant in the area.[6]

- The community was the last home of [Louis P. Harvey](/source/Louis_P._Harvey), the short-lived [governor of Wisconsin](/source/Governor_of_Wisconsin), who drowned bringing medical supplies to wounded troops near the [Civil War](/source/American_Civil_War) [Battle of Shiloh](/source/Battle_of_Shiloh) in 1862.[8]
