**Shirase Coast** ([78°30′S 156°0′W / 78.500°S 156.000°W / -78.500; -156.000](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Shirase_Coast&params=78_30_S_156_0_W_scale:4000000)) is the north segment of the relatively ill-defined coast along the east side of [Ross Ice Shelf](/source/Ross_Ice_Shelf) and [Ross Sea](/source/Ross_Sea), lying between the north end of [Siple Coast](/source/Siple_Coast) (about [80°10′S 151°00′W / 80.167°S 151.000°W / -80.167; -151.000](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Shirase_Coast&params=80_10_S_151_00_W_)) and [Cape Colbeck](/source/Cape_Colbeck). Named by [NZ-APC](/source/NZ-APC) in 1961 after Lieutenant [Nobu Shirase](/source/Nobu_Shirase) (1861–1946), leader of the Japanese expedition, whose ship *Kainan Maru* sailed near this coast in January 1912. Landings were made at [Kainan Bay](/source/Kainan_Bay) and at the [Bay of Whales](/source/Bay_of_Whales), the origin of a 160-mile journey southeast on Ross Ice Shelf. From [76°56′S 155°55′W / 76.933°S 155.917°W / -76.933; -155.917](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Shirase_Coast&params=76_56_S_155_55_W_) (off [Edward VII Peninsula](/source/Edward_VII_Peninsula)), another party landed for a sledge trip to the edge of the [Queen Alexandra Range](/source/Queen_Alexandra_Range).
