The **shining parrots**, ***Prosopeia***, are a genus of [parrots](/source/Parrot) in the family [Psittaculidae](/source/Psittaculidae).

The genus is [endemic](/source/Endemism) to the islands of [Fiji](/source/Fiji), although one species, the [maroon shining parrot](/source/Maroon_shining_parrot), has been [introduced](/source/Introduced_species) to [Tonga](/source/Tonga). The three species are also sometimes known as **musk parrots**.

The shining-parrots have long tails, a languid crow-like [flight](/source/Bird_flight) and very bright [plumage](/source/Plumage).

## Taxonomy

The genus *Prosopeia* was introduced in 1854 by the French naturalist [Charles Lucien Bonaparte](/source/Charles_Lucien_Bonaparte) to accommodate a single species, the [masked shining parrot](/source/Masked_shining_parrot).[1][2] The genus name is from the [Ancient Greek](/source/Ancient_Greek) *prosōpeion* meaning "mask".[3] The genus now contains three species:
