# Shields River

The **Shields River** is a tributary of the [Yellowstone River](/source/Yellowstone_River), 65.4 miles (105.3 km) long, in [Meagher](/source/Meagher_County,_Montana) and [Park Counties](/source/Park_County,_Montana) [Montana](/source/Montana) in the [United States](/source/United_States).

It rises in the [Gallatin National Forest](/source/Gallatin_National_Forest) in the [Crazy Mountains](/source/Crazy_Mountains) in northern [Park County](/source/Park_County,_Montana). It flows west, then south, between the [Bridger Range](/source/Bridger_Mountains_(Montana)) to the west and the Crazy Mountains to the east, past [Wilsall](/source/Wilsall,_Montana) and [Clyde Park](/source/Clyde_Park,_Montana). It joins the Yellowstone approximately 10 mi (16 km) northeast of [Livingston](/source/Livingston,_Montana). The Shields River was named for [John Shields (explorer)](/source/John_Shields_(explorer)), a member of the [Lewis and Clark Expedition](/source/Lewis_and_Clark_Expedition).[3]

The river hosts native [Yellowstone cutthroat trout](/source/Yellowstone_cutthroat_trout) and [Mountain whitefish](/source/Mountain_whitefish) as well as introduced [brown](/source/Brown_trout) and [rainbow trout](/source/Rainbow_trout).[4]
