**Sherman Hoar** (July 30, 1860 – October 7, 1898) was an American lawyer and politician who was a member of [Congress](/source/United_States_Congress) representing [Massachusetts](/source/Massachusetts), and [U.S. District Attorney](/source/U.S._District_Attorney) for Massachusetts. As a young man he was the model for the head of the [John Harvard statue](/source/John_Harvard_(statue)) now in the Harvard Yard.

Hoar in his student days

Hoar graduated from [Harvard College](/source/Harvard_College) in 1882 and [Harvard Law School](/source/Harvard_Law_School) in 1884. While at Harvard he sat as the model for the head of the [John Harvard statue](/source/John_Harvard_(statue)) which now sits in [Harvard Yard](/source/Harvard_Yard). In 1885 he was admitted to the bar of [Middlesex County](/source/Middlesex_County%2C_Massachusetts) and commenced practicing law in [Concord, Massachusetts](/source/Concord%2C_Massachusetts).

Though from a prominent Republican family Hoar was a [Mugwump](/source/Mugwump), leading the Young Men's Democratic Club of Massachusetts during [Grover Cleveland](/source/Grover_Cleveland)'s 1884 campaign, and was a member of the [House of Representatives](/source/United_States_House_of_Representatives) in the [Fifty-second U.S. Congress](/source/Fifty-second_U.S._Congress) (1891–1893). He was U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts, 1893–1897.

Hoar was director of the [Massachusetts Volunteer Aid Association](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Massachusetts_Volunteer_Aid_Association&action=edit&redlink=1) during the [Spanish–American War](/source/Spanish%E2%80%93American_War), and served[*[clarification needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Please_clarify)*] in several US Army hospitals in the South. He was also a great believer in [public education](/source/Public_education). He once said: "Our [public school system](/source/Education_in_the_United_States) is what makes this Nation superior to all other Nations—not the [Army](/source/U.S._Army) or the [Navy](/source/U.S._Navy) system. ## Death

After an illness of three weeks, Sherman Hoar died at his home on Main street, Concord, of typhoid fever contracted while making a tour of the Southern camps as a General of the Massachusetts Volunteer Association.[2]
