In May 1685, the [Crown hetman](/source/Hetmans_of_the_Polish%E2%80%93Lithuanian_Commonwealth) and [Kraków](/source/Krak%C3%B3w) [Voivode](/source/Voivode) [Feliks Kazimierz Potocki](/source/Feliks_Kazimierz_Potocki) purchased land along the [Bug River](/source/Bug_River). In 1692, he founded a city on the lands of the village Novyi Dvir ({{Literal translation|New Garden}}, {{Langx|pl|Nowy Dwór|links=no}}) and named it "Krystynopol" after his wife [Krystyna Lubomirska](/source/Krystyna_Lubomirska_(d._1669)) (the [suffix](/source/suffix) "-pol" derives from [Greek](/source/Greek_language) "[polis](/source/polis)"<ref>{{cite book|last1=Karpluk|first1=Maria|title=Mowa naszych przodków: podstawowe wiadomości z historii języka polskiego do końca XVIII w|date=1993|publisher=TMJP|page=46|language=pl}}</ref>). Potocki made the city his family center. He died here on 22 September 1702. His grandson [Franciszek Salezy Potocki](/source/Franciszek_Salezy_Potocki) built a palace and in 1763 founded a [Krystopil monastery](/source/Sheptytskyi_Monastery) of [Basilians](/source/Order_of_Saint_Basil_the_Great) (barocco church of Saint George; prior to 1946 – a place of miracles with wondrous icon of the [Mother of God](/source/Mother_of_God)).<ref name=":0">{{Cite journal|last=Syrtsov|first=Oleksandr|date=June 2013|title=The Donbas of Halychyna|url=https://i.tyzhden.ua/content/photoalbum/2013/june/16/book%2011_2.pdf|journal=The Ukrainian Week|volume=11|issue=53 |pages=34–35|via=Tyzhden}}</ref> Among the landmarks of the city is Count Potocki's palace, constructed by the order of Feliks Kazimierz Potocki after 1692.<ref name=":0" /> The city, as Krystynopol, was part of the [Polish Kingdom](/source/Crown_of_the_Kingdom_of_Poland) in the [Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth](/source/Polish%E2%80%93Lithuanian_Commonwealth) until 1772, when it was incorporated into the [Habsburg Empire](/source/Habsburg_monarchy).

In the 19th century, the [Apostolus Christinopolitanus](/source/Apostolus_Christinopolitanus) and the chronicle from 1763 to 1779 were kept in the city. The Catholic order of [Myrrh-Bearing Sisters](/source/Myrrh-Bearing_Sisters) was founded by Fr. Yulian Datsii in 1910, with the purpose of gathering funds to build a home for orphans and the poor. The first members of the congregation vowed to build two buildings: one for the people and one for the congregation. In 1913, the first convent arose, where 15 sisters lived.
During [World War II](/source/World_War_II), the town was occupied by [Nazi Germany](/source/Nazi_Germany) from 1939 to 1944.

After [World War II](/source/World_War_II) ended, the town was initially given back to Poland by the [Soviet Union](/source/Soviet_Union).

During the [interwar period](/source/interwar_period), it belonged to the [Second Polish Republic](/source/Second_Polish_Republic), and between 1945 and 1951 was part of the [Polish People's Republic](/source/Polish_People's_Republic). It passed from Poland to the [Ukrainian SSR](/source/Ukrainian_SSR) of the Soviet
Union after the [territorial exchange in 1951](/source/1951_Polish%E2%80%93Soviet_territorial_exchange) and had its name changed from Krystynopil ({{Lang|uk|Кристинопіль}}) to Chervonohrad, after the color red ({{Langx|uk|червоний|links=no|translit=chervonyi}}).

A local newspaper is published in the city since June 1962.<ref>No. 2942. «Новости Прибужья» = «Новини Прибужжя» // Летопись периодических и продолжающихся изданий СССР 1986 - 1990. Часть 2. Газеты. Until 18 July 2020, Chervonohrad was designated as a [city of oblast significance](/source/City_of_regional_significance_(Ukraine)) and belonged to [Chervonohrad Municipality](/source/Chervonohrad_Municipality). As part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, which reduced the number of raions of Lviv Oblast to seven, Chervonohrad Municipality was merged into newly established Chervonohrad Raion.<ref>{{Cite news|title=Про утворення та ліквідацію районів. In August 2023, [Ukrainian Institute of National Memory](/source/Ukrainian_Institute_of_National_Memory) decided that the name of the city did not meet the law "[On the Condemnation and Prohibition of Propaganda of Russian Imperial Policy in Ukraine and the Decolonization of Toponymy](/source/On_the_Condemnation_and_Prohibition_of_Propaganda_of_Russian_Imperial_Policy_in_Ukraine_and_the_Decolonization_of_Toponymy)", meaning that Chervonohrad will be renamed.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Bohdaniok |first=Olena |date=2023-08-03 |title= |script-title=uk:Деколонізація: УІНП підготував перелік населених пунктів, які варто перейменувати |trans-title=Decolonization: UINM prepared the list of populated places that need to be renamed |url=https://suspilne.media/543519-dekolonizacia-uinp-pidgotuvav-perelik-naselenih-punktiv-aki-varto-perejmenuvati/ |website=[Suspilne](/source/Suspilne)}}</ref> On 20 March 2024, the Committee of the [Verkhovna Rada](/source/Verkhovna_Rada) on issues of organization of state power, local self-government, regional development and urban planning decided to propose the name Sheptytskyi,<ref>{{Cite web |last=Braslavskyi |first=Dmytro |date=2024-03-20 |title= |script-title=uk:Червоноград, Павлоград і Бровари перейменують. The Jewish cemetery is located in the town center, in Shevska Street.
