# Shelly Stokes

**Shelly Stokes** (born October 26, 1967) is an American, former collegiate [All-American](/source/All-American) and Olympic champion, right-handed [softball](/source/Softball) player originally from [Sacramento, California](/source/Sacramento,_California).[1] Stokes was a [catcher](/source/Catcher) for the [Fresno State Bulldogs](/source/Fresno_State_Bulldogs) in the [Big West Conference](/source/Big_West_Conference) from 1987-90.[2] She led them to three back-to-back runner-up finishes in the [1988](/source/1988_Women's_College_World_Series), [1989](/source/1989_Women's_College_World_Series) and [1990 Women's College World Series](/source/1990_Women's_College_World_Series), also being named All-Tournament in the 1989 series.[3][4][5][6] Stokes would go on to win gold with [Team USA](/source/United_States_women's_national_softball_team) in the [1996 Atlanta Olympics](/source/1996_Atlanta_Olympics).[7]

## Career

She competed at the [1996 Summer Olympics](/source/1996_Summer_Olympics) in [Atlanta](/source/Atlanta) where she received a gold medal with the American team.[8] Stokes had a hit, RBI and walked twice at the games.[9]

Stokes played NCAA softball for [California State University, Fresno](/source/California_State_University,_Fresno).
