# Sheldon Solomon

**Sheldon Solomon** is an American [social psychologist](/source/Social_psychologist). He is a professor of psychology at [Skidmore College](/source/Skidmore_College) in [Saratoga Springs, New York](/source/Saratoga_Springs,_New_York). Solomon is best known for developing [terror management theory](/source/Terror_management_theory), along with [Jeff Greenberg](/source/Jeff_Greenberg_(professor)) and [Tom Pyszczynski](/source/Tom_Pyszczynski). This theory is concerned with how humans deal with their own [sense of mortality](/source/Mortality_salience).[1][2]

## Education and career

Solomon earned his [B.A.](/source/B.A.) from [Franklin & Marshall College](/source/Franklin_%26_Marshall_College) and his [Ph.D.](/source/Ph.D.) from the [University of Kansas](/source/University_of_Kansas).[1][2]

Currently the Ross Professor for Interdisciplinary Studies at Skidmore College, he is best known for developing [terror management theory](/source/Terror_management_theory). Solomon, [Jeff Greenberg](/source/Jeff_Greenberg_(professor)), and [Tom Pyszczynski](/source/Tom_Pyszczynski) co-authored the book *The Worm at the Core: On the role of Death in Life* in 2015.[3][4]

He is also the author and co-author of more than one hundred articles and several books, and he has been featured in several films, including *[Flight from Death](/source/Flight_from_Death)* and *[Planet of the Humans](/source/Planet_of_the_Humans)*. In the latter, he links the pursuit of [renewable energy sources](/source/Renewable_energy_sources), such as wind and solar, to the reluctance of humans to face their own mortality.[5]

## Personal life

Solomon co-founded Esperanto, a restaurant in [Saratoga Springs](/source/Saratoga_Springs), and invented the "doughboy"—dough filled with cheese, chicken, and spices.[6]
